TwitterDinner Ladies cook and serve food in a school cafeteria. They also patrol the school playgrounds during the lunch breaks to maintain safety amongst the children.
Their duties include supervising pupils in the dining hall, playground and other school premises, and making sure they do not leave the school or go into areas that are out of bounds.
Their tasks are likely to include:
encouraging children to eat healthily
cleaning up spillages, and possibly helping catering staff
overseeing children in the playground or during wet play
caring for the personal cleanliness of children and supervising toilet facilities
maintaining order, cautioning children who misbehave and reporting problems
making sure children who are ill or injured receive appropriate medical attention.
Working hours are shifts, usually between 12 noon and 1.30pm, Monday to Friday. Employed during term-time only. Their work takes place indoors in a school, and outside in a playground. The work environment can be lively and noisy.
Dinner Ladies are usually paid an hourly rate, which varies depending on the area. They may earn between £1,660 and £2,500 or more a year, based on working one and a half hours a day for three 12-week terms, without any holiday pay.
